Generics are Powerful Medicine is pleased to offer visitors to our website a new resource, Ask Pharmie. Ask Pharmie is an occasional "advice column" put out by another project at Generics are Powerful Medicine's parent organization Community Catalyst, Prescription Access Litigation. Ask Pharmie aims to answer common consumer questions about prescription drugs and the pharmaceutical industry.

Question: "I recently switched from a brand name drug to a generic version to save money. Although the generic works just as well, the pill is a different color and shape from the brand-name. This is confusing. Why don’t the generic pills look the same as the brand name pills?"

To read the answer, go here.

Our "Is Your Drug Available as a Generic?" tool allows you to look up many of the most prescribed brand-name drugs to see if a generic version is available. We've just added drugs that have had generic versions become available for the first time this year. Most of the information is from a page on the FDA website, "Generic Drug Approvals." The FDA has only posted information through August 2008. Other information is from news media reports. We will continue to update our tool as new information is released.

The new drugs include:
